Fiber to Waveguide Couplers for Silicon Photonics
As silicon photonics enters mainstream technology, we find ourselves in need of methods to seamlessly transfer light between the optical fibers of global scale telecommunications networks and the on-chip waveguides used for signal routing and processing in local computing networks. Connecting these components directly results in high loss from their unequal sizes. Therefore, we employ a coupler...
متن کاملLow-energy distortion-free femtosecond pulse laser inscription in coated, free-standing optical fiber
Low-energy, distortion-free femtosecond pulse laser inscription in coated freestanding fiber is demonstrated for the first time. Methodology features radial plane beamshaping to achieve optimal focusing and spot-like inscription within the fiber. Strong, firstorder fiber Bragg grating is achieved in coated single-mode fiber using only 50nJ pulse energy.
متن کاملAll-optical soliton switching for the asymmetric fiber couplers
Coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations for the fiber couplers with asymmetric selfphase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) are studied. With symbolic computation, oneand two-soliton solutions are obtained for the constantand variable-coefficient CNLS equations. Switching dynamics of the solitons is discussed, and effects of the second-order group-velocity dispersion β2, S...
متن کاملComposite Cavity Fiber Laser with Asymmetric Output Intensity and Wavelength
The composite cavity fiber laser (CCFL) is relatively simple in its fabrication, as it is essentially three wavelength matched Bragg gratings in a section of doped fiber. By using internal feedback with unequal sub-cavity lengths, unidirectional CCFLs with significantly asymmetric output power from its two outputs can be achieved. Preliminary results also show that it is possible for the lasing...
متن کاملOptical fiber couplers for precision spaceborne metrology.
We describe the optical and mechanical design, construction philosophy, and testing of a pair of matched, spaceflight-qualified fiber couplers. The couplers were developed for the LISA Pathfinder mission but are relevant for other applications-both on ground and in space-where a robust fiber coupler with well-controlled beam parameters and stable beam pointing is required. This particular imple...
